Utah’s Craft
Beer Scene
Is Exceptional.

The state with the strictest reputation has the Mountain West’s most interesting brewery scene. Counterintuitive. Completely true.

Anyone who tells you Utah doesn’t have good beer hasn’t been paying attention. Salt Lake City’s Granary District alone has more quality craft taprooms per block than most American cities manage per neighborhood. Fisher Brewing’s Czech lagers win national awards. Templin Family Brewing won Best Brewery. Bewilder turned a vacant downtown building into one of the most popular taprooms in the Mountain West. Ogden’s Historic 25th Street has Roosters, the anchor of that city’s cultural renaissance. This guide covers every brewery in Northern Utah — by county, with addresses, descriptions, and links to every spot worth visiting. There are more of them than you probably think.

Know Before You Go

Utah Beer Laws — What Actually Matters

The Short Version for New Residents and Visitors
Grocery / convenience store beer: Capped at 5.0% ABV since 2019 (was 3.2% before — that law is gone). Most major domestic and craft brands available.

Taprooms and licensed bars: No ABV cap. Full-strength beers on tap at every licensed Utah taproom — the 5% limit only applies to packaged beer sold in grocery stores. Fisher’s Czech pils, Epic’s Big Bad Baptist (11%+), Bewilder’s imperial stouts — all available on tap.

Private club membership: Eliminated in 2009. Walk into any Utah taproom or bar. No card required.

DABC liquor stores: State-run stores carry spirits, wine, and high-ABV packaged beer. Find locations at abc.utah.gov ↗. Closed Sundays.

Food requirement: Many licensed establishments require some food service — most taprooms satisfy this with a kitchen or rotating food trucks.

Bottom line: Utah’s craft taprooms are fully accessible, serve world-class full-strength beer, and don’t require any setup. The regulations are quirky but navigable, and they’ve created a craft beer culture that is arguably more thoughtful and quality-focused than states with no restrictions at all.
Salt Lake City’s National Names

SLC Flagship Breweries — The Ones with National Recognition

Fisher Brewing Company
320 W 800 S, Salt Lake City · Granary District · fisherbrewing.co
Production & Taproom
National award winner · World-class lagers
Fisher is the brewery that changed how the national craft beer community thinks about Utah. Opened 2018 in the Granary District, Fisher has won international recognition for its lager program — a technically demanding discipline that most American craft breweries avoid. The Czech-style pilsners and German lagers from Fisher are among the best produced anywhere in the United States, period. The taproom is one of SLC’s best — industrial warehouse with exposed brick, a long wooden bar, and a patio that would hold its own in Portland or Brooklyn. The beer list extends to exceptional IPAs, rotating seasonals, and small-batch programs that keep regulars returning weekly. First-visit order: whatever lager is on. The Czech Pils if available. Fisher is the honest answer to “what’s the best brewery in Utah?” for anyone who takes craft lager seriously.

City Weekly Best Brewery winner · Lagerville champion
Templin Family Brewing won City Weekly’s Best Brewery award, claiming both the People’s Choice and a place in the Lagerville Hall of Fame — a testament to how quickly they’ve established themselves as one of SLC’s most beloved taprooms. The Templin specialty is traditional lagers built with German brewing precision, alongside a rotating program of sours, barrel-aged beers, and double IPAs. The outdoor patio with fire pits and twinkle lights is one of SLC’s most inviting warm-weather brewery settings — dog-friendly, spacious, and social. The Ferda DIPA has a devoted following, and the lingonberry sour turns heads from non-beer-drinkers. Templin demonstrates exactly the kind of quality that emerges when Utah brewers commit to a specific style with discipline.

Beer Questions

Utah Breweries FAQ

Is Utah beer weak?
No — this is 2026, and that myth is thoroughly outdated. The 3.2% beer law was repealed in 2019. Grocery store beer is capped at 5.0% ABV — the same or similar to many other states. Beer served at licensed taprooms has no ABV cap whatsoever. Fisher Brewing’s Czech Pils, Epic’s Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout (11%+), Bewilder’s seasonal imperial stouts, Templin’s double IPAs — all full-strength. Utah’s craft breweries regularly produce high-ABV beers across every style. The myth persists because people remember what Utah was like before 2019.
What is the best brewery in Northern Utah?
Fisher Brewing for national recognition and world-class lager quality. Templin Family Brewing for City Weekly Best Brewery and the best patio atmosphere. Bewilder Brewing for the best downtown SLC taproom experience with excellent food. Red Rock Brewing for the most comprehensive brewpub experience and 30+ years of consistent quality. In Ogden: Roosters without question — Historic 25th Street’s anchor institution since 1995.
Do I need a membership to drink at Utah taprooms?
No. The private club membership requirement was eliminated in 2009 — over 15 years ago. You can walk into any licensed Utah brewery taproom or bar without a membership card, sign-up fee, or any other setup. Many Utah residents still think this rule is in effect because it was a defining feature of Utah alcohol culture for decades. It isn’t.
What breweries are in the Granary District?
The Granary District brewery cluster — walkable from each other in southwest SLC — includes Fisher Brewing (320 W 800 S), Kiitos Brewing (608 W 700 S), Level Crossing Brewing (2496 S West Temple), SaltFire Brewing (2199 S West Temple), and T.F. Brewing (936 S 300 W). Templin Family Brewing is at the same 936 S 300 W address. A Saturday afternoon crawl covering all five is one of the best things to do in SLC.
