Utah Celebrates
All Year Long.

From world-famous film festivals to pioneer parades, outdoor concerts to harvest fairs — the Utah events calendar is one of the best-kept secrets in the Mountain West.

New residents are often surprised by the depth and variety of Utah’s event culture. January brings the Sundance Film Festival and transforms Park City into a global entertainment event. July 24 stops the state — Pioneer Day is celebrated with more intensity than the Fourth of July in many communities. September’s State Fair has operated continuously since 1856. Summer outdoor concerts at the Ogden Amphitheater draw tens of thousands. Every canyon, every community, every season has its gathering. This is your guide to building a Utah social calendar that makes the year feel full.

July 24 — A Utah Primer

Pioneer Day — Understanding Utah’s Most Important Holiday

Pioneer Day on July 24 is one of the first things newcomers need to understand about Utah cultural life — and it’s one of the things they most consistently underestimate. This is not a minor regional observance. Pioneer Day is a Utah state holiday on par with Thanksgiving in terms of the cultural significance placed on it by the dominant LDS community. State offices, schools, many businesses, and a significant portion of Utah’s workforce treat July 24 as a full holiday.

The day commemorates July 24, 1847 — the date that Brigham Young and the first company of Mormon pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley after a 1,300-mile journey from Winter Quarters, Nebraska. Young’s famous declaration “This is the right place” upon seeing the valley is one of Utah history’s defining moments.

What Happens on Pioneer Day

"I’d been to Mardi Gras, I’d been to the Rose Parade. The Days of ‘47 Parade was unlike any of them — not because of production scale but because of what it meant to the people watching it."
California transplant, Salt Lake City
Pioneer Day for Non-LDS Residents
For newcomers who aren’t LDS, Pioneer Day can feel confusing at first. Some context: the day is a genuine state holiday with civic significance that extends beyond religious observance. The parade includes floats from businesses, civic organizations, and communities without LDS content. The fireworks are simply excellent fireworks. The rodeo is professional-level Western sport.

The practical impact: Expect that many businesses, doctors’ offices, and services will be closed or have reduced hours on July 24. Plan accordingly — grocery shopping before the day, restaurant reservations in advance if you want to dine out, and expect the parade route to create significant traffic patterns in SLC for most of the morning.
June Through September

Calendar Questions

Events & Festivals FAQ

What is the biggest annual event in Utah?
For national and international attention: the Sundance Film Festival in January. For cultural significance within Utah: Pioneer Day on July 24 — a state holiday with a parade that draws 60,000+ spectators and celebrations statewide. For attendance volume: the Utah State Fair in September draws 300,000+ over 11 days. For the outdoor community: the Outdoor Retailer Snow Show brings the global outdoor industry to SLC every January.
What events are free in Utah?
Utah has exceptional free events throughout the year. Temple Square Christmas Lights (November–January). Days of ‘47 Parade (July 24, street viewing free). Downtown SLC Farmers Market (free admission, May–October Saturdays). Utah Pride Festival (free general access). The Provo Freedom Festival parade. July 4 and Pioneer Day fireworks across the valley. Multiple city concert series in Ogden and SLC. Utah has a strong culture of free public celebration.
How do I get Sundance Film Festival tickets?
Tickets go on sale at sundance.org in late November or December, before the festival opens in January. The best approach for Utah residents: (1) Buy individual tickets in the December sale — better selection and no package requirements. (2) Volunteer — shift workers receive ticket access in exchange for their time. (3) Use SLC satellite screenings at Broadway Centre Cinemas for festival films without Park City crowds or costs. (4) Attend the second week — same films, dramatically smaller crowds, and often last-minute ticket availability. Sundance’s lottery for packages opens in September.
What are the best summer events for families in Northern Utah?
County fairs (Davis County Fair in August, Weber County Fair in August, Utah County Fair in August) are excellent family days with affordable admission. Salt Lake Bees baseball games at Smith’s Ballpark are outstanding family entertainment value — Friday night fireworks post-game are a summer tradition. Red Butte Garden concerts with lawn seating are family-friendly and beautiful. Lagoon Amusement Park in Farmington provides full amusement park programming including Pioneer Village. And the informal summer culture of canyon evenings, reservoir outings, and neighborhood block parties is the most distinctively Utah family entertainment experience.
