The Road
Is the
Destination.

Utah’s most spectacular roads are within 90 minutes of your front door. Here is every drive worth knowing.

Most Utahns drive through Logan Canyon at 65 mph without stopping. They commute through Provo Canyon and barely look up. They’ve lived within 30 minutes of Big Cottonwood Canyon for years and visited it twice. This guide is an invitation to actually drive these roads — to pull over, to let the canyon walls do their work, to understand what it means to live in a state where the most spectacular roads in North America are a Tuesday-evening option. This is your guide to every drive worth making, organized by distance, season, and purpose.

Logan Canyon Scenic Byway — US-89 North

Logan Canyon Scenic Byway
US-89 · Logan to Bear Lake · 41 miles · National Scenic Byway
90 min from SLC · 45 min from Ogden
Year-round · Chains may be req. winter
Paved · All vehicles
The Logan Canyon Scenic Byway on US-89 is where Northern Utah residents go when they need beauty without effort — 41 miles from Logan to Bear Lake following the Logan River through one of the most dramatically beautiful limestone canyons in the American West. The canyon walls are high and close, the cottonwood, maple, and oak on the slopes turn explosive orange and red every fall, and the drive culminates in one of Utah’s greatest single-moment revelations: you round a bend on the plateau above Bear Lake and the impossibly turquoise water appears below. Bear Lake’s Caribbean blue-green color comes from limestone particles suspended in the water refracting light — it looks edited, and it isn’t. The canyon is accessible, spectacular in every season, and within reach of anyone living north of SLC for a half-day without planning. The full round trip with time at Bear Lake is an excellent full-day outing.
Key Stops Along the Route

Utah’s Highest Paved Road

Mirror Lake Scenic Byway — UT-150 over the High Uintas

Mirror Lake Scenic Byway
Utah Highway 150 · Kamas to Evanston, WY · 65 miles · National Scenic Byway
65 min from SLC via I-80 E to Kamas
SEASONAL: Late May/Jun – November
Highest pass: 10,687 ft · Paved · All vehicles
The Mirror Lake Scenic Byway is the most dramatic alpine highway accessible from Northern Utah — climbing from the Kamas Valley at 6,500 feet to Bald Mountain Pass at 10,687 feet across the High Uinta Mountains. The Uintas are unique in North America: the only major mountain range running east-west in the contiguous US, with a high plateau character of rounded summits, broad meadows, and glacially carved alpine lakes that feels more like the Canadian Rockies than Utah. The July drive through the Uintas in wildflower season is one of Utah’s most purely beautiful experiences — meadows at 9,000 feet in full bloom, small alpine lakes reflecting peaks above, moose in the willow corridors. Mirror Lake near the summit is the pull-off that justifies the entire drive. The road continues to Evanston, Wyoming, enabling a full loop return via I-80 through Echo Canyon. Check opening dates annually — high snowpack years don’t clear the pass until late June.
Key Stops
  • Provo River Falls Overlook 10 miles from Kamas; a waterfall series on the Provo River from a short pullout walk. Peak flow in late May–June snowmelt.
  • Mirror Lake (10,000 ft) The byway’s namesake lake reflects Hayden Peak on calm mornings. Sought-after campground surrounds the lake. Reserve at recreation.gov ↗
  • Bald Mountain Pass (10,687 ft) The high point; a 0.5-mi trail reaches Bald Mountain summit with 360-degree Uinta views across 50+ miles of wilderness.
  • Moose Meadows Willow flats along the upper highway are reliable moose habitat — scan at dawn and dusk, drive slowly through meadow sections.
  • Evanston, WY Northern terminus for the loop return via I-80 W through Echo and Parley’s Canyons back to SLC.
Opening Dates
Typically late May to mid-June depending on snowpack. Check UDOT 511 ↗ or USFS ↗ before visiting — some years the pass doesn’t open until late June.
Recreation Fee
$6/day at Mirror Lake area sites. America the Beautiful Pass covers this fee.
Best Months
July for peak wildflowers. Mid-September for fall color at lower elevations. Avoid after mid-October — snow at 10,000 ft can arrive any time.
Full Loop
SLC → I-80 E to Kamas → UT-150 over pass → Evanston, WY → I-80 W → Parley’s Canyon → SLC. Full loop is ~5 hrs with stops.
USFS Info
Uinta-Wasatch-Cache NF Mirror Lake Camping Road Conditions (UDOT 511) Best strategy: drive east toward Wyoming in the morning, lunch in Evanston, return via I-80. The full loop is one of Utah’s best day drives.

The Wasatch Canyon Drives — Little & Big Cottonwood

Little Cottonwood Canyon
Utah Highway 210 · Sandy to Alta/Snowbird · 11 miles · Terminus at 8,540 ft
25 min from SLC via I-215
Year-round · avalanche closures winter
Paved · Steep grade · 4WD/chains in winter
Little Cottonwood Canyon is arguably the most dramatic of the Wasatch canyon drives — granite walls press in tightly as the road ascends, and the scale of those walls dwarfs everything built at their base. The canyon’s geological character is specific: the Wasatch Granite intrusion produced the white and gray faces that Alta and Snowbird sit against, and in winter with fresh snow those faces glow against blue sky in a way that photographs and compels the drive. The road to Alta on a bluebird powder morning — skiers already visible on the Alf Engen Museum bowl above, the canyon walls white, the creek running under ice below — is one of the quintessential Utah winter experiences available to non-skiers and skiers alike. Summer brings excellent hiking from trailheads at road’s end. Albion Basin above Alta in July is Utah’s best accessible subalpine wildflower meadow. The UDOT LCC Gondola now operates during avalanche control closures, eliminating the old powder-day canyon lockout.
Key Stops
  • Snowbird Aerial Tram (year-round) Tram to 11,000-ft summit operates for non-skiers year-round; views of the entire Salt Lake Valley and Wasatch Range. snowbird.com ↗

Big Cottonwood Canyon
Utah Highway 190 · Cottonwood Heights to Brighton / Solitude · 15 miles
30 min from SLC via I-215
Year-round · All vehicles
Big Cottonwood Canyon has a softer character than LCC — a broader canyon with more vegetation, the Big Cottonwood Creek running alongside the road, and a varied landscape of granite outcrops, aspen groves, and dark spruce forests. BCC is where SLC families go for a Sunday drive — accessible, beautiful, and ending at Brighton’s lake and Silver Lake trailhead. The Silver Lake Boardwalk is one of the most accessible short walks in the Wasatch: a 1-mile loop around a high-elevation lake with wildflowers and direct views of Mount Millicent. BCC is particularly spectacular in fall when mid-canyon aspen groves turn gold — typically October 5–20. Donut Falls, 9 miles up, is the canyon’s signature family hike — a waterfall that flows through a hole in a large boulder into a cave-like pool, 1.8 miles roundtrip. Note: No dogs permitted in BCC — it is part of SLC’s drinking water watershed.
Key Stops
  • Donut Falls (9 mi up) 1.8-mile RT to a uniquely formed waterfall — water flows through a hole in a large boulder. Most popular family hike from SLC. AllTrails ↗
  • Silver Lake Boardwalk (Brighton, 15 mi) 1-mile accessible loop at 8,740 ft around Silver Lake; wildflowers in July, fall color in October. Brighton Resort ↗
  • S-Curves Overlook Mid-canyon pullouts provide the best canyon photography at golden hour, especially in fall when aspen groves glow below.
Best Season
Oct 5–20 for peak aspen gold. July for Silver Lake wildflowers. Winter for Brighton/Solitude ski access.
Watershed Rules
No pets, no swimming. BCC is part of SLC’s municipal watershed — dogs are not permitted in the canyon.
Ski Resorts
Brighton Resort Solitude Mountain Donut Falls Trail BCC in October at 4pm — golden hour on aspen groves above the creek — is one of the most reliably beautiful experiences the Salt Lake Valley offers.
Weber County’s Gateway

Ogden Canyon to Huntsville & Powder Mountain

Ogden Canyon Scenic Drive
Utah Highway 39 · Downtown Ogden to Huntsville / Pineview Reservoir · 8 miles through canyon
15 min from Ogden · 55 min from SLC
Year-round
Paved · Narrow in places · All vehicles
Ogden Canyon is Weber County’s daily escape — the 8-mile canyon on UT-39 from downtown Ogden to Pineview Reservoir is dramatic out of all proportion to its length. The Ogden River runs the full length, the walls are high and close, and the vegetation — riparian cottonwood at the base, oak and maple on the slopes — turns orange-red in October in a display that rivals larger canyons. The combination of Ogden Canyon and Pineview Reservoir as a half-day outing is Weber County’s most popular family drive: canyon leads to reservoir, reservoir leads to Huntsville and the Ogden Valley with mountain views and small-town character. Continue on UT-39 past Huntsville toward Monte Cristo Summit (9,148 ft) for an extended mountain drive through terrain that few outside Weber County know. The Eden/Nordic Valley corridor beyond Pineview adds one of Northern Utah’s most beautiful mountain valley drives to any Ogden Canyon visit.
Key Stops
  • Pineview Reservoir Summer swimming, boating, fishing, and camping at the canyon’s end. recreation.gov ↗
  • Huntsville Village Small historic town with the Monastery of the Holy Trinity (Utah’s second-oldest abbey, 1947) and the legendary Shooting Star Saloon — Utah’s oldest continuously operating bar (est. 1879).
  • Eden / Nordic Valley The Ogden Valley road to Eden provides mountain valley views with access to Nordic Valley ski and Powder Mountain approach. powdermountain.com ↗
  • Monte Cristo Summit (9,148 ft) UT-39 continues east past Pineview through alpine terrain to a high mountain crossing rarely visited outside Weber County.
Fall Color Peak

Utah County’s Gateway to the Heber Valley

Provo Canyon Scenic Drive — US-189 & Wasatch Byway

Provo Canyon Scenic Drive
US-189 · Provo to Heber City · 12 miles · Wasatch Scenic Byway designation
5 min from Provo · 45 min from SLC
Year-round · All vehicles
Provo Canyon is Utah County’s most-driven scenic route — the primary connection between the Wasatch Front and the Heber Valley — and delivers extraordinary scenery even at highway speed. The canyon narrows dramatically in its middle section where the Provo River runs directly alongside the road through tight limestone walls, then opens into the broad Heber Valley — one of Utah’s most beautiful agricultural valleys, ringed by mountains and anchored by Timpanogos rising to the north. Bridal Veil Falls on the canyon wall is the drive’s signature landmark: a double cascade falling 607 feet visible from the highway. The UT-92 turnoff mid-canyon leads 4 miles to Sundance Mountain Resort. The Provo Canyon corridor is also the gateway to the Heber Valley Railroad — vintage steam train excursions through the valley that are among Utah County’s most unique family experiences. The Heber Valley beyond the canyon end is genuinely beautiful agricultural country: dairy farms against Timpanogos, ranches in the valley bottom, seasonal roadside stands in harvest season.
Key Stops
  • Bridal Veil Falls Trailhead Utah’s most accessible tall waterfall (607 ft); short walk to the base from the highway. Peak flow in spring snowmelt. AllTrails ↗

Utah County’s Fall Color King

American Fork Canyon & Alpine Loop — US-92

American Fork Canyon & Alpine Loop
US-92 · American Fork to Sundance Resort · 21 miles · Seasonal closure in winter
45 min from SLC via I-15 S
May–November · Seasonal closure
No trailers/long vehicles · Steep switchbacks
American Fork Canyon and the Alpine Loop are Utah County’s definitive fall color drive — and in October at peak aspen, arguably the most spectacular fall color experience in all of Northern Utah. The dense aspen groves in the middle elevation band of American Fork Canyon create an unbroken corridor of gold and orange that fills the canyon walls. The Timpanogos massif rising above the aspen color is the backdrop that makes this drive visually extraordinary. Traffic on peak fall color weekends (second and third week of October) requires a 7am departure to avoid backups — this drive is that popular, and deservedly so. The Alpine Loop continues from the canyon over the Timpanogos ridge to Sundance Resort and descends through Provo Canyon — a complete 46-mile loop and one of Utah’s most rewarding half-day drives. Timpanogos Cave National Monument, accessible mid-canyon, adds a cave tour option (advance reservation required in summer). Cascade Springs — a 4-mile dirt spur to natural limestone pools and small waterfalls — is the byway’s most serene and least-visited stop.
Key Stops
  • Timpanogos Cave National Monument Cave tours through three decorated limestone caves; 1.5-mi trail to cave entrance is spectacular canyon walk. nps.gov/tica ↗

Nebo Loop Scenic Byway — Mount Nebo (11,928 ft)

Nebo Loop Scenic Byway
UT-132 & Forest Road 015 · Payson to Nephi · 38 miles · National Scenic Byway
75 min from SLC via I-15 S
June–October · Seasonal
Paved · All vehicles
The Nebo Loop is Utah’s most underrated scenic drive — a 38-mile arc around the southern end of the Wasatch Range, circling the flanks of Mount Nebo (11,928 ft, the range’s highest peak) and connecting Payson to Nephi through terrain that changes dramatically with elevation. The drive begins with a limestone canyon section, climbs through aspen forests and meadows past viewpoints above 9,000 feet, and descends through open terrain to the central Utah high desert near Nephi. The Mount Nebo Wilderness Overlook at 9,300 feet is the centerpiece — three summits visible above the canyon systems below. The byway in fall is extraordinary: an unbroken corridor of aspen gold visible from ridge overlooks for miles, with dramatically fewer crowds than American Fork or Logan Canyon. Payson Lakes at the northern end is a popular camping area; the drive to Nephi completes a clean loop back to I-15 south of SLC.
Key Stops
  • Payson Lakes Recreation Area Multiple small lakes, fishing, camping, and July wildflowers at the byway’s northern start. recreation.gov ↗
  • Mount Nebo Wilderness Overlook (9,300 ft) Brief pullout walk to panoramic views of Nebo’s three summits and the canyon systems below.
  • Nebo Summit Multiple pullouts with expansive views east into Utah Valley and west over the Juab Valley desert.
  • Nephi Southern terminus; friendly small central Utah town. I-15 north completes the loop return to SLC.
Best Season

October Is the Month

Utah’s Best Fall Color Drives

Utah’s fall color season is compressed but intense — driven by altitude rather than latitude, most Northern Utah canyon drives reach peak aspen gold between September 25 and October 20. The combination of aspen gold against limestone cliffs, granite faces, and canyon walls creates visual drama that rivals anything in America.

Fall Color Peak Timing by Elevation
High elevations (9,000–11,000 ft) — Peak late September to early October. Mirror Lake Highway upper sections, Nebo Loop summit area, Monte Cristo.
Mid elevations (7,000–9,000 ft) — Peak October 5–18. Logan Canyon, American Fork (Aspen Grove area), Ogden Canyon upper, Bear Lake Summit.
Lower canyon (5,500–7,000 ft) — Peak October 10–25. LCC/BCC canyon floors, Provo Canyon lower section, Ogden Canyon mouth.

Utah Highway 12 between Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef is consistently ranked among the top 10 most scenic roads in America — 124 miles of geological extremes culminating in the Hogback, where the road narrows to a spine above 1,000-ft drops on both sides. visitutah.com ↗

For Northern Utah residents who want spectacular without a full weekend: Logan Canyon (US-89, 90 min) and Mirror Lake Highway (UT-150, 65 min) are comparable in scenic intensity and within easy reach.
When is the best time to drive American Fork Canyon for fall color?
Peak aspen gold in American Fork Canyon is typically October 8–18, with higher elevations (Aspen Grove at 7,500 ft) turning before lower sections. Weekday visits in the second or third week of October avoid peak weekend traffic. Depart from SLC before 8am on weekends — the canyon road backs up by 10am at peak color. Check USFS fall color reports ↗ or utahscenicdrive.com ↗ starting in late September.
When does the Mirror Lake Highway open?
Typically late May to mid-June depending on snowpack, and closes in November. The highway crosses the Uintas at 10,687 feet at Bald Mountain Pass — Utah’s highest paved road. Always check UDOT.utah.gov or call 511 before visiting. High-snowpack years can push the opening to late June.
What scenic drives near Salt Lake City are open year-round?
Year-round drives from SLC: Little Cottonwood Canyon (UT-210, chains/4WD in winter), Big Cottonwood Canyon (UT-190), Provo Canyon (US-189), Ogden Canyon (UT-39), and lower American Fork Canyon. Logan Canyon (US-89) is year-round but may require chains in winter. Mirror Lake Highway (UT-150) and the Alpine Loop (US-92) are seasonal closures — typically November through May/June.
Can dogs go on scenic drives in the Wasatch canyons?
Yes in most canyons — with an important exception: Big Cottonwood Canyon (UT-190) prohibits dogs entirely, as it is part of Salt Lake City’s municipal drinking water watershed. Little Cottonwood Canyon, Logan Canyon, Ogden Canyon, Provo Canyon, and American Fork Canyon all permit dogs. Always keep pets on leash and pack out waste on all USFS-managed roads.
